Its has been brought to my attention this morning that we are losing more and more control of our personal lives. Reported in the AM New York newspaper this morning, after banning the butts from the bars, beaches, and parks, they city is targeting young New Yorkers in its battle against smoking. The mayor Micheal Bloomberg along with majority council support purpose a new bill that would make the Big Apple the first big city to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21. The reason, too many teenagers are getting hooked not only because they can't start buying packs at 18 but because they are often given cigarettes to their younger friends. The other reason ties into "Those people who are not smokers at the age of 21 are less likely to ever start. For me its really difficult to comprehend, because for one thing 18 years of age is a teenager yes, but by the rules of society confirms we are adults. We have the right to vote, we can enlist and serve our country, so why are we being treated like kids, when it comes to our own individual rights and freedom, why should someone else redefine our adulthood? We are grown by our parents and by our guardians, to affectedly think for ourselves by the age of 18, to have the right to make our own choices without the constant involvement of others , so what does this new law justify? We are not old enough to make our own decision? When we can die for our country at 18, but our own personal pleasures don't matter? Lastly, no matter how you try to put up barriers, fences, and walls around things, its not going to eradicate the problem, because the problems still exist. That is why we have parents, teachers, guidance counselors, elders to make us aware of the influences of our world. Kids are always going to find away around situations, remember when you were a kid? The only way to tackle these issues is to be upfront and honest and hope they will make the right decision for themselves.
