I read this really interesting article in the amNew York newspaper this morning on why art is so important to a child's mental development. NYers around the city are asking the candidates who are running for major to share their ideas for arts in education in public schools. Here are some ideas that were purposed: Putting in place dedicated arts funding at each and every city school. This then will allow less emphasis on testing and test prep to make room for art which will significantly reduce stress among students. In New York City where education is the top priority and the next mayoral race just around the corner this will increase understanding by parents and employers of the importance of providing a rich and engaging curriculum to the children. With NYC;s rich and cultural resources, artist and creative industries, and the developing laser- like focus on college and career readiness, there's no reason that we should be not only the world's cultural capital, but arts and creative education capital as well.
